Find out moreSince April 2017, a new permanent exhibition expands section 1 of the “Erlebniswelt: Vermoegensplanung ist Lebensplanung”. No other question occupies society and each individual in their private lives more than the one of what we can afford. Right at the start of the new exhibition, you can ask yourself the exhibition's title question and enter over either the wealth or the poverty thresholds. Using statistics and official definitions, the exhibition explores a range of aspects of these two opposites – presented in opposing sections of the exhibition space. While "wealth" extends over a spacious area on one side, space on the poverty side is tight.
Income is the main factor considered when calculating poverty and wealth, but those on low incomes are not necessarily poor. What is more important is the combination of earnings and capital. The corresponding diagrams on the wall at the front therefore connect the two extremes. They clearly show that Germans are very concerned with security and place a large proportion of their assets in property, and less in high-risk investments.
This small but in-depth exhibition on a highly complex, fascinating and extremely important issue is a voyage of discovery. The design of the exhibition, the items on display and the multimedia installations clearly demonstrate the complexity of the question. Interactive installations are a chance for visitors to investigate the question for themselves, and they turn an abstract issue into a tangible experience. For example, you can share in the luxury life of the super-rich with the "suitcase of money", find out about the pros and cons of capital tax and try to meet your weekly food needs on a small budget in a shopping simulation.
